Bee kind: Bees’ Needs Week is coming 🐝

14th–20th July 2025

Pollinators are having their moment — and rightly so. Bees’ Needs Week, a nationwide campaign led by Defra, returns this July to raise awareness about the importance of bees, butterflies and other helpful pollinators. It’s a chance to celebrate the quiet work they do and share easy ways to give them a hand.

Whether it’s planting bee-friendly herbs, letting your lawn grow wild for a week, or simply leaving out fresh water, there are plenty of gentle ways to support these tiny powerhouses. Small changes, big impact — and your garden will love you for it.

A hopeful homecoming: Axolotls return to the wild 🦎

In Mexico, conservationists have given a critically endangered amphibian a fresh start. The charming and much-loved axolotl — often described as looking like it’s always smiling — has been successfully reintroduced to newly restored wetlands near Mexico City.

With only around 50 wild axolotls thought to remain, the release of 18 into safe, thriving habitats is a real milestone. Early signs show the axolotls are feeding, growing and adapting well — a hopeful chapter for one of nature’s most unique and iconic species. It’s the kind of happy news that gives real hope for our planet’s future.

Making waves: Big love for Britain’s blue spaces 🌊

Across the UK, communities are quietly transforming our relationship with the sea. Organisations like Surfers Against Sewage and the Marine Conservation Society are making real change, from national beach cleans to campaigns for improved water quality.

This month, a 12-year-old swimmer from England raised over £1,300 for ocean conservation with a chilly 3km open water swim. It’s proof that you don’t need to be big to make a splash, just brave, committed, and a little waterproof.

Outdoorsy and optimistic: Nature and mental health 🧠

More and more people in the UK are turning to nature as a gentle way to support their wellbeing. From “blue prescribing” programmes in London to community wild swim groups up and down the country, nature is increasingly seen as a form of care, one with no side effects and plenty of fresh air.

Spending time in green or blue spaces has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood and boost cognitive function. Whether it’s a mindful walk, a wild dip, or just sitting near water with a cuppa, the benefits can be quietly powerful.
